Year 1 at primary school

At St. John‘s, Year One is the last school year and the first year of primary school. Mathematics and literacy are taught in a more structured way and children are introduced to the English National Curriculum.

Literacy

  • Children learn to speak confidently
  • Sound and name the letters of the alphabet
  • Begin to read and write independently
  • Use language to explore their experience
  • Use capital letters, regular spaces and full stops
  • Read and Spell familiar words

Numeracy

  • Children learn to count reliably
  • Count on and back
  • Count in tens from and back to zero
  • Read, write and order numbers
  • Understand and use vocabulary of comparing and ordering
  • Understand the operation of addition and subtraction
  • Learn about shape, measure and data handling
