Dear Parents

Welcome Back!

Our Christmas Play was a huge success. The children did a wonderful job and we would like to thank all the parents for helping out.

It was also great having all the Christmas lanterns around us to brighten up our school.

Our next issue will be out on the 1st of February.

 Birthdays in January

  • 14th – Gabriel Neves
  • 15th – Carlota Trincheiras
  • 22nd – Frederica Mendonça
  • 26th – Francisco Pou
  • 28th - Sara Vairinhos
  • 31st – Henrique Matias

Young Toddlers

We will be working on colours, more precisely: Blue, red, yellow and green. We will be singing our flower/colour song and link some of the colours to objects. We do this by playing a game: We have a box full of colourfull balls, we choose a colour and each child has to pick out a ball with the same colour. At home you can help your young toddler by pointing at different objects and asking about its colour.

Song: Yellow flowers, blue flowers, red flowers

          I can see

          Pink flowers, orange flowers

In the garden I can see.

Toddlers

Happy 2010 to all families! We are back for another exciting experience, the 2nd Term!

Our toddlers are growing and developing so quickly, this term brings them new challenges to meet their needs. January means winter, and winter means new vocabulary, knowledge and art experiences.

For now we have been investigating about wintry weather (windy, cold, cloudy, and rainy) and appropriate clothes (woolly hat, scarf, mittens, coat, and boots).

Our favorite song at the moment is: Rain, rain go away, come again another day, I want to go out and play, rain rain go away.

We would also like to ask parents’ help, it would be great if you could bring from time to time waste material from home (empty boxes, little plastic bottles, cardboard, ribbons, toilet paper rolls…) anything which you think might be useful. Thank you!

Nursery News (3 Year Olds)

As part of our language teaching, Nursery children will be introduced to several traditional stories such as: “We’ve all got Bellybuttons”, “The Gingerbread Man”,

“The Three Little Pigs”, “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and  “Faster, Faster! Nice and Slow!”

The main objectives are for children to learn to sit through story time and show interest and listen with enjoyment to books.

We will be introducing basic mathematical concepts and vocabulary such as: “big/ small”, “short/long”, “high / low”, “in / out”, “up / down” to compare objects.

We will also be working on children’s cognitive skills and continue to work on basic pencil skills/fine motor skills this term.

Reception News (4 Year Olds)

Here we are again! I hope you and your family had a nice holiday and lots of fun!

After two weeks of holiday we started the second term and we didn’t sit still these two first weeks.

During the first week we made a ‘Bolo Rei’ and it was great: kneading, decorating…! Hopefully you had the chance to taste it!  We also learned about the 4 seasons by singing songs and dancing.

In Literacy we started to blend some words and learned new phonics. In Numeracy we repeated the shapes and worked with a lot of numbers.

During the second week we went to see where the animals hide during the winter. We are working on a beautiful display. When you have the time, come and take a look. Will you find the animals?

We also started with the ‘High frequency words’. These are words we need in order to read the simplest texts. So step by step we are coming closer to ‘reading’! To finish a little song we learnt about the animals in the winter:

Scurry Squirrels and don’t be slow.

Winters coming, don’t you know

Scamper, scamper all around.

Bury treasure in the ground

Winters coming, don’t you know?

Year 1 News (5 Year Olds)

Winter Poem

Icy fingers, icy toes

Bright red cheeks and bright red nose.

Watch the snowflakes as they fall,

Try so hard to count them all.

Build a snowman way up high,

See if he can touch the sky.

Snow forts, snowballs, angels too.

In the snow, so white and new.

Slip and slide and skate so fast.

Wintertime is here at last.

Reminders:

Homework is sent out on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Mondays- Literacy (Jolly Phonics)

Wednesdays – Numeracy

Thursdays – Spelling

Fridays – Literacy, (Jolly Phonics) and Reading.

(This may change slightly from week to week as we move along!)

Please make sure that your child’s homework is in school the following day no matter what! Even if he/she didn’t do it for some reason.
