St.John’s School Newsletter

Dear Parents

Assessment week will be held from the 23rd till the 27th November. Please ensure that throughout this week your child gets sufficient sleep and rest, as well as a well-balanced diet; as these are known to increase his/her alertness during the day.  All assessments begin at 9:15am and so that your child does not feel rushed in any way, please make sure she/he is at school before this time.

Your child should, in no way, be made to feel nervous about this approaching week because, although important, assessments are not the only curricula for reports and the whole term’s work is considered when writing them.

Thank you for your cooperation.

  • We are all looking forward to seeing your homemade Christmas lanterns…how are they coming along? Don’t forget that the most important “rule” is that you and your child have lots of fun while making them!
  • Photo day is this Wednesday (18th November). All children must come fully dressed in their winter uniform as mentioned on the letter sent home on the 25th September.
  • We would like to remind you that our field trip “O Mundo dos Sonhos” will be held on the 25th November (Wednesday).
  • Please make sure that your child’s costume is coming along for the Christmas play.

St. Martins Legend

It is said that St. Martin (a Roman Soldier) was caught in a downpour of rain with only his cape to protect him. While riding to get out of the horrible weather he was approached by a beggar, with hardly a thread to cover him from the cold weather. St. Martin was moved by the man’s misery - he grabbed his sword - reached back for his wool cape, cut it in half and covered the beggar. The legend has it, when St. Martin covered the beggar the clouds drifted and beams of sun lit up the sky (known as St. Martins Summer).

This day is traditionally celebrated by eating roasted chestnuts and by drinking a traditional liquor called Agua-pé or Jeropiga.

                         Lost and Found

A red jersey with a zip and a hood has gone missing from year 1.

Please could you have a look at home?

Thank you.
